Why PVC

Not every commercial roof faces the same conditions. Standard membranes perform well on office buildings and retail centers, but restaurants, commercial kitchens, manufacturing plants, and food processing facilities put roofs under chemical stress that most membranes are not designed to handle.

Grease exhaust, cooking oils, animal fats, and industrial solvents break down conventional roofing materials over time. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) was engineered specifically for these environments. Its chemical composition resists degradation from oils, greases, and chemical exposure that would shorten the life of TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen systems.

If your facility has kitchen exhaust vents, grease traps on the roof, or any process that puts chemical byproducts in contact with the roof surface, PVC is the right specification.

How PVC Performs

  • Chemical resistance. PVC membrane resists degradation from animal fats, vegetable oils, restaurant grease, and many industrial chemicals. This is the primary reason it is specified for restaurants and food-service properties.
  • Heat-welded seams. Like TPO, PVC sheets are joined with hot-air welding. The welded seam is actually stronger than the membrane itself, creating a monolithic, watertight surface with no adhesive that can fail over time.
  • Fire rating. PVC carries strong fire-resistance ratings, an important consideration for commercial kitchens and industrial facilities.
  • Energy efficiency. White PVC membrane reflects solar radiation, helping reduce cooling costs. In Middle Georgia’s climate, that reflectivity translates directly to lower energy bills on large, flat-roofed buildings.
  • Longevity. PVC roofing systems routinely deliver 20 to 30 years of service life with proper maintenance. When installed as a Mule-Hide certified system, warranty coverage can extend across both materials and workmanship.

Where PVC Makes the Most Sense

We install PVC roofing across Middle and South Georgia on properties where chemical exposure, fire rating, or regulatory requirements make it the best-performing option:

  • Restaurants and commercial kitchens
  • Food processing and packaging facilities
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Hospital and medical facility roofs near exhaust systems
  • School and university cafeteria buildings
  • Any commercial property with rooftop grease exhaust or chemical ventilation

For commercial properties without significant chemical exposure, TPO is often the more cost-effective choice. We assess every building individually and recommend the membrane system that fits the conditions, not the one with the higher price tag.

PVC vs. TPO: When to Choose Which

Both are thermoplastic, single-ply membranes with heat-welded seams. The difference comes down to chemical exposure:

  • Choose PVC when the roof surface will contact grease, oils, cooking exhaust, or industrial chemicals. PVC’s chemical backbone handles these exposures without degrading.
  • Choose TPO for standard commercial environments (offices, warehouses, retail, churches) where chemical resistance is not a primary concern. TPO delivers excellent performance at a lower installed cost.

We install both systems as Mule-Hide certified projects with full-system warranty options. During your assessment, we evaluate the building’s use, the rooftop equipment and exhaust layout, and the existing roof condition to recommend the right system.

Our Installation Approach

  1. Assessment. We inspect the existing roof, document conditions, and evaluate whether the deck and insulation can be retained or need replacement.
  2. System specification. Based on the building’s use and exposure conditions, we specify membrane thickness, insulation type and R-value, and attachment method.
  3. Installation. Tear-off of the existing system (if required), deck inspection and repair, new insulation, PVC membrane installation with heat-welded seams, and completion of all flashings, penetrations, and edge details.
  4. Quality check and warranty. Final walkthrough, manufacturer warranty registration, and documentation of the completed system.
